MOON WATER
2000

Soloists:
Mischa Maisky (cello)
Orchestra, Chorus:
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan
Choreographer:
Lin Hwai-Min

Following the release of Bamboo Dream featuring the music of Arvo Pärt, celebrated choreographer Lin Hwaimin has selected compositions from suits for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach, combining his music with movements derived from Chinese martial arts of Tai Chi. During the breathtaking performance, water sweeps across the stage and is flicked in arcs from the dancers' moving arms and feet. the sound of splashing water mingles with Bach's music as the dancers throw themselves on the stage, gliding on the fine film of liquid. An aesthetically scintillating performance with remarkable studio production. Desribed by the Times as ''Asia leading contemporary dance theatre'', Cloud Gate's repertoire has its roots firmly in the myths, folklore and aesthetics of the East. ''Energy flows as water, while the spirit shines as the moon'': this description of the ideal state for a Thai Chi practioner was one of the starting points for this astonishing production.
