The Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons is recognised as one of the most distinguished musicians of his generation and now belongs to the international elite of his profession. He was the Music Director of the Oslo Philharmonic from 1979 to 2000. Under his guidance, it became established as a front-rank orchestra, touring extensively and becoming a firm favourite at many festivals around the world, noted for its fresh, open sound and Jansons’ passionate conducting of the works of Shostakovich, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Bartók. At this DVD, Jansons is seen rehearsing Bartók’s powerful Miraculous Mandarin Suite with the Oslo Philharmonic and the following performance at the Oslo Concert Hall.
