Cloud Gate Dance Theatre's extraordinary blend of contemporary dance, ballet and traditionla Chinese dance takes its influence from elements as diverse as calligraphy, meditation and martial arts. Here in the choreography of the artistic Director Lin Hwai-Min, age-old beliefs and stories are brought into contemporary and universal perspective taking its inspiration from the Bamboo which is seen in China as a symbol of integrity and epitome of elegance. A fascinating series of scenes follow the course of the seasons: Morning Mist, Spring Breeze, Summer Heat, Autumn Path, When Rain Stops, At Midnight and Snow. They are performed to a combination of some of the most well-known pieces by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and melodies improvised by Chinese flute player Huang Shen-kai. Described by The Times as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theatre”, Cloud Gate’s repertoire has its roots in the myths, folklore and aesthetics of the East.
