Since the 19th century the Norwegian painting gained increasing national character and put forth remarkable artists whose paintings are housed in the National Gallery Oslo, the biggest art collection in Norway. Among them the most famous Norwegian artist is Edvard Munch. But also Harald Sohlberg, known for his significant landscape paintings, the most important representatives of the Norwegian naturalism Harriet Backer and Kitty Kielland as well as the prodigy Halfdan Egedius, whose expressive portraits caused furore.
