Under the direction of one of the best Strauss conductors of today, Christoph von Dohnányi, and with a cast of particularly strong singer-actors, this sweeping view of a radical work makes for a powerful visual and musical impression on DVD. Thus the female roles are of particular importance and the singers in this production are particularly well suited to their roles. Eva Johansson is Elektra, Marjana Lipovšek is her murderous mother and Melanie Diener embodies the much more practical sister Chrysothemis – the antithesis of her long-suffering, loyal sister.
