The turn of the year is celebrated in a festive manner by the Staatskapelle Berlin with a concert. In accordance with tradition a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is on the program. In addition, on New Year’s Day 1997 Daniel Barenboim conducted a festive concert program with soloists, magicians and dancers. It was transmitted worldwide by many television stations and now appears on DVD. The stars of the New Year’s concert included the young violinist Raphael Christ, the sopranos Dorothea Röschmann and Simone Nold, and Rosemarie Lang, Reiner Goldberg and René Pape amongst others, who you can see and hear singing songs and opera excerpts by Kurt Weill, Walter Kollo and W.A. Mozart. Barenboim also directs orchestral pieces by Otto Nicolai, Camile Saint-Saëns, P.I. Tchaikovsky, Dimitri Shostakovich, Paul Lincke and finally, of course, the polka Unter Donner Und Blitzen by Johann Strauss.
